In memory of Dr. Sakthivel Prabakaran

Dr. Sakthivel Prabakaran, together with his wife Jansirani, laid the foundation for the Wisconsin Tamil Sangam. A microbiologist who settled in Madison in 1993, he longed to carry the Tamil language and culture to the next generation. He passed away in 2025, and WITS carries his vision forward in his memory. These are his own words, spoken in 2022.

தமிழன் என்று சொல்லடா தலை நிமிர்ந்து நில்லடா

அனைவருக்கும் வணக்கம். எனது பெயர் சக்திவேல் பிரபாகரன், விஸ்கான்சின் தமிழ் சங்கத்தின் நிறுவனர் என்ற முறையில் விஸ்கான்சின் தமிழ் சங்கம் உருவாவதற்கு அடித்தளம் அமைத்து குடுத்த பெருமை எனக்கு உண்டு மற்றும் என் மனைவி ஜான்சிராணிக்கும் உண்டு என்று சொல்லி கொள்வதில் பெருமகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறேன்.

நான் மதுரை காமராஜர் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் நுண்ணுயிரியில் முதுநிலை மற்றும் முனைவர் பட்டம் பெற்று 1993-ம் ஆண்டு இங்கு மடிசனுக்கு குடியேறினேன். இங்கு மேனிலை ஆராய்ச்சிக்காக விஸ்கான்சின் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் விஞ்ஞானியாக பணிபுரிந்தேன், தற்போது இந்தியா ஹவுஸ் என்ற பெயரில் இந்திய பல்பொருள் அங்காடி ஒன்றை நடத்தி வருகிறேன்.

1995'இல் தமிழின மக்களை காண்பதே அரிதான காலகட்டங்களில், சில தமிழ் குடும்பங்களை கொண்டு தமிழ் சங்க ஆரம்பிக்கலாம் என்று முடிவுக்கு வந்தேன், தமிழ் சங்கத்தில் மூலமாக நம் மொழிக்கு கலாசாரத்தை அடுத்த தலைமுறைக்கு எடுத்து செல்ல வேண்டும் என்ற ஆர்வமே மிகுதியாக இருந்தது.

விஸ்கான்சின் தமிழ்ச்சங்கமானது தமிழ் மொழி மற்றும் தமிழ் பாரம்பரியம் மற்றும் தமிழ் கலாச்சாரத்தை நமது அடுத்த தலைமுறைக்கு எடுத்து செல்லவும் தமிழ் பேசும் மக்கள் ஒருங்கிணைந்து செயல்படவும் நிறுவப்பட்டது.

நம் குழந்தைகள் மற்றும் இளம் தலைமுறையினர் தமிழ் பேச கற்று கொள்ளவும் நம் வாழ்வியல் முறையை தெரிந்து கொள்ளவும் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. பொங்கல் திருநாள், தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு, கோடை விழா, மற்றும் முத்தமிழ் விழா என்று நான்கு பருவ நிலைகளிலும் நிகழச்சிகளை நடத்தி வருகிறோம்.

2010ஆம் ஆண்டில் இருந்து நமது விஸ்கான்சின் தமிழ்ச்சங்கம் வட அமெரிக்க பேரவையுடன் உறுப்பினராக இணைந்து செயலாற்றி வருகிறோம்.

Greetings to all. My name is Sakthivel Prabakaran. As the founder of Wisconsin Tamil Sangam, I take great pride — as does my wife Jansirani — in having laid the foundation for the creation of WITS, and it gives me deep joy to say so.

I earned my master's and doctorate in Microbiology from Madurai Kamaraj University and settled here in Madison in 1993. I worked as a research scientist at the University of Wisconsin, and today I run an Indian grocery store called India House.

In 1995, in a time when it was rare even to come across fellow Tamils, I resolved to start a Tamil sangam with a handful of Tamil families. My deepest wish was to carry our language and culture to the next generation through the sangam.

Wisconsin Tamil Sangam was founded to carry the Tamil language, heritage and culture to our next generation, and to bring Tamil-speaking people together to work in unity.

It was created so that our children and younger generation could learn to speak Tamil and understand our way of life. We hold events through all four seasons — Pongal, Tamil New Year, the Summer festival (Kodai Vizha), and Muthamizh Vizha.

Since 2010, Wisconsin Tamil Sangam has been an active member of the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA).

What we stand for

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Wisconsin Tamil Sangam is dedicated to advancing Tamil language and literature, sharing Tamil culture, history, and heritage, and bringing Tamil-speaking and like-minded people together — a secular organization that welcomes everyone, regardless of nationality, origin, or belief.

As set out in our bylaws, we exist to:

• Foster understanding and the exchange of ideas between Tamil-speaking and like-minded communities.
• Advance knowledge of the Tamil language and literature.
• Promote understanding of Tamil culture, history, and heritage.
• Build fellowship through cultural and social gatherings.
• Work closely with other Tamil Sangams toward shared goals.
• Remain a secular organization, open to all regardless of nationality, origin, or religious belief.
